Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body: it filters your blood, and for it to work as it should, it has to remain clean.
Liver detoxification, or cleansing, your liver is a must, especially at this time of year, after you have eaten all those holiday season lavish lunches and dinners. However, keeping your liver clean can be done naturally, simple by eating the right liver detox foods.
How to detox your body naturally?
Before trying to cleanse your liver, it’s a good idea to learn how to avoid causing your liver problems in the first place. Three rules of thumb to help keep your liver in good shape are:
1. Avoid drugs unless your doctor advises otherwise,
2. Limit your intake of alcohol, and
3. Moderate your consumption of fat, especially saturated fat.
Once you know what to avoid, you need to know what you can do to detoxify your liver and keep it clean. There are a number of foods that help eliminate the toxins that accumulate in liver tissue and prevent it from working.
The first of these liver detox foods is garlic which, when consumed in small quantities, activates enzymes that help you body keep itself “clean” internally. Why garlic? Because garlic contains allicin and selenium, two natural substances that help cleanse the liver. Next up, there’s grapefruit, which – as well as oranges and mandarins – is also very good at flushing out unwanted liver toxins. This is because citrus fruits are rich in antioxidants which help enhance the detoxification process. Finally, there’s green tea. This precious drink is rich in antioxidants and catechins, a substance that improves liver function.
Other good liver detox foods are chicory, carrots, papaya, artichokes, beets, lettuce and tomatoes.
All packaged foods, whether they contain natural preservatives of not, are to be avoided, as are refined carbohydrates, oils that are not made with olives, and animal fats, such as lard.
Eat correctly, and your liver will thank you for it by helping you stay healthy.
